16th March 2011

Back to work on my saloon (galley actually) doors, and I set about getting the 2nd one up. These things have been kicking about the boat since 2007 so it will be nice to see them installed. unfortunately, it's brain-storm day for me and first mistake I notice is that the lower hinges are higher on one side than the other. What was I thinking? Hopefully no-one except me will notice as they're not in an eye-line (except that I've told you now, so you'll look). Second mistake is when I cut out for the hinges in the door, I miss the top hinge. I manage to make this good with a bit of wood trimmed from the top, and in the end that's not noticeable either, but my confidence is getting shaky now. Finally I get the 2nd door fitted and it's a bit proud of its partner. This is ok, I'd hoped it would be because I wanted to lap the edges so that a single catch would secure them both when closed. So I take a rebate out with the router and then re-fitting shows that the door aperture is about 4mm narrower at the bottom than the top. This means I'm going to have to trim the doors a little for a perfect fit, a delicate task that I don't feel up to in my present cack-handed state, so I leave it be.
