Boatyards»back to top
Calcutt Boats www.calcuttboats.com «««
Small Chandlery, big marina. No fit outs. Very nice people but make sure you give written instructions. And don't use joined-up writing.
Kate Boats www.kateboats.co.uk ««««
Usual boatyard services. Didn't use them in the end, but they bent over backwards trying to accomodate me. Exceptionally friendly.
Brokers»back to top
By no means an exhaustive list, but worth a look. Can't vouch for the service as I didn't use a broker in the end, but I did visit most of these in person at some stage.
ABNB Brokerage www.abnb.co.uk «««
Based in Crick, Northants. Friendly and helpful staff. Top-notch boats, nearly all ex-private.
Alvechurch Brokerage www.alvechurch.com/frameset_brokerage.html ««««
Just south of Birmingham, with yards elsewhere. Some private boats, but a good source of ex-hire.
Boats-to-go www.boatstogo.co.uk «««
General on-line brokerage. Worth a look, quite a variety of boats on offer.
Braunston Marina www.braunstonmarina.co.uk «
Based in the canalopolis that is Braunston. Don't appear to try too hard. Perhaps it was me...
Calcutt Boats www.calcuttboats.com ««
Not much for sale, and no pictures when I last looked. Worth a look if only for the other boats and the fabulous pubs in nearby Long Itchington. Hic.
Harral Brokerage www.harralbrokerage.co.uk «««
Nice site with a large variety of boats across a wide price range.
Look-4-Boats www.look4boats.com/list_canal.php «««
Quite a few boats on here, with pictures, if you can forgive them their "spud-u-like" name. Honestly.
Otherton Boat Haven www.othertonboathaven.co.uk «««
Small number of boats on offer. But the name, Aaah, it's like rescuing a donkey.
Stoke Boats www.longportbrokerage.co.uk/boats.asp ««
Wacky site, murder to navigate and no pictures. There seems to be quite a few boats on offer, though, so perhaps a visit in person would be in order.
Whilton Marina www.whiltonmarina.co.uk ««««
This is more like it. Loads of boats, with not only pictures but downloadable .pdf brochures too! Must have a computer nerd in the family.
Chandlers»back to top
Midland Chandlers www.midlandchandlers.co.uk ««««
Suppliers of virtually all my marine supplies. Large stock and surprisingly on-the-ball.
Harveys Boatbuilders www.harveysboatbuilders.co.uk ««««
Suppliers of the specialist timber for the "Cat". Anything they don't got, they can get. And they DO phone you back. Amazing!
Finance»back to top
Barclays www.personal.barclays.co.uk «««
Marine mortgages from 25k on offer.
Collidge and Partners www.collidgeandpartners.co.uk ««««
Aforementioned canal maffia. They know everybody. Offer residential marine mortgages and are extremely friendly and helpful. There's bound to be a catch somewhere but have not found it as yet.
Royal Bank of Scotland www.bankofscotland.co.uk/marine «««
Good site that includes a "My God, how much!?" calculator to scare your pants off.
Royscot Larch www.royscotlarch.co.uk/inland/finance.asp ««««
In bed with Collidge and Partners, so much so that they're sometime difficult to tell apart.
Waterways Stuff»back to top
Boat Safety Scheme www.boatsafetyscheme.com/site/Home_1.asp ««««
Essential reading, especially if you're building/fitting out your own boat. Your has to comply with this scheme to get insurance and a licence.
Canalworld www.canalworld.net/forums «««««
Little on-line canal community. Absolute wealth of information on here, and if you can't find what you need, just ask. Everyone's really helpful.
Waterscape www.waterscape.com ««««
British Waterways own site. Lists of moorings (bit of a crap search engine), boater's guides and details of all stoppages.
Boater's Guides www.waterscape.com/things-to-do/boating/guides ««««
Individual canal maps showing locks, bridges, winding holes and the like. Also show recent stoppages, so well worth a look for that reason alone. Where they fall down is that there is information about the surrounding landscape, such as roads etc. And it's not always clear where one waterway becomes another.
